About the Event

Who should attend:

Law Enforcement, Fraud Investigators, Cyber Investigators, Other Govt, Banking, and Students. This immersive course expounds upon the skills and fundamentals taught in introductory cyber courses. The course will provide attendees with an understanding of ransomware and best practices/tools for first response to ransomware incidents:

  • What is Ransomware?
  • Types of Ransomware
  • How does it work?
  • Responding to an attack
  • Stop the spread
  • Investigative strategies
  • Finding available unlock keys
  • Prevention
  • Open Source Tools for investigations

OSINT techniques and other methods to investigate potential threat actors. Students will hear from case studies involving ransomware investigations.  During the practical portion of this course students will run open source tools that will aid them in responding to and investigation ransomware incidents.  (Practical part will run on Ai6 virtual desktops in a protected sandboxed environment.

Where: Virtual - Live instruction 

NOTE:

Students will be required to install Zoom on their local machines. The entire course is delivered on the Ai6 virtual desktop (DaaS) accessible through Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. No software installation is required. This is a highly interactive course with an emphasis on practical real-world experience.

Instructors Biography

Mr. Sean WILLIAMS

Sean Williams is a Trainer and Intelligence Analyst within Training at the National Cyber-Forensics & Training Alliance (NCFTA) located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sean does dark web research and analysis on illicit markets, forums, actors, coordinates and develops training on a variety of topics. He received a graduate degree in Security and Intelligence Studies from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

Ms. Katie Fox - NCFTA - Intelligence Analyst (Malware and Cyber Threat Team)

Katie specialized in mobile malware analysis, malware and ransomware investigations and analysis, and dark web research. She holds a BSc in Psychology and a MSc in Human-Computer Interaction.

Mr. Christopher Cullen - NCFTA - Intelligence Analyst (Malware and Cyber Threat Team)

Chris is a new addition to the NCFTA team. He graduated from Robert Morris University with a degree in Cyber Forensics and Information Security. He works on the malware analysis and investigations portfolio.

Mr. Justin Timothy - NCFTA - Intelligence Analyst (Malware and Cyber Threat Team)

Justin specialized in malware analysis and web scraping.  He received his BSc in Computer Science from Seton Hill University in May 2020.  

Ms. Stephanie M. Corvese - Manager: Risk & Forensics - Grant Thornton LLP

Stephanie started with Grant Thornton in 2017 and has been involved in performing forensic acquisitions and analysis of electronic data from a range of digital media including, computers, tablets, smartphones, and removable media such as USB keys SD cards, and other consumer electronic devices including cloud storage. She is also an active member of the cyber breach response investigations team and the OSINT investigations team.

Ms. Corvese will be presenting a case study involving the Lockbit variant.  Ms. Corvese will walk through students on using open source tools when first responding to ransomware investigations.  Each student will have their on virtual desktop for the practical section.
