Cryptocurrency Investigations Course

This immersive course will provide investigators with an understanding of cryptocurrencies and the blockchain and the role they play in our society.  Investigators will learn of various investigative methods and open source resources available to aid them in investigations involving cryptocurrencies.

The course will provide attendees with an in-depth understanding of the online criminal ecosystem that relies on cryptocurrencies and the anonymity it affords.  The training will be mostly hands-on, with students walking through the steps, explanations of the programs and demonstrations.  This training will have a large practical component.

• Understand cryptocurrencies, the blockchain, cryptocurrency exchanges, mixers/tumblers
• Types of cryptocurrencies and how to use them
• Examine different types of wallets and how they work
• Investigating/examining the blockchain, wallets and transactions
• Transacting in cryptocurrencies and chain hopping
• Intro to Digital forensics for cryptocurrencies
• Tracing Cryptocurrencies
• Case Law and Laws in relations to digitial investigations

Instructors Biography 

Mr. Sean WILLIAMS

Sean Williams is a Trainer and Intelligence Analyst within Training at the National Cyber-Forensics & Training Alliance (NCFTA) located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sean does dark web research and analysis on illicit markets, forums, actors, coordinates and develops training on a variety of topics. He received a graduate degree in Security and Intelligence Studies from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

Ms. Adrienne Vickery

Adrienne is a member of the RCMP since 2005, currently holding the rank of Inspector, in charge of the RCMP’s national cryptocurrency program, assigned to National Headquarters (NHQ), Federal Policing Criminal Operations (FPCO), Financial Crime - Proceeds of Crime Money Laundering section. Her presentation will look at the value that cryptocurrencies offer to the criminal element and the various ways in which they are being exploited. She will present the liability risks for law enforcement, how to alleviate them, and the national efforts being made to tackle crypto enabled crime in Canada.

Mr. Ryan Berry

Ryan has worked as a regular members with the RCMP since 2008. Ryan currently holds the rank of Sergeant and is posted to the National Cybercrime Coordination Center in Ottawa.  Ryan has worked numerous cases involving crypto as a Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering instrument including; Fraud/Ponzi exchanges, ransomware, remote desktop takeover/theft, darkness marketplaces, extortion and theft.

Mr. Michael Fawcett

Michael works as Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office (Criminal) branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. He provides legal assistance on various cyber- and crypto-related law enforcement investigations happening across the country, and also appears in court on search and seizure and digital-privacy related matters. He also lectures frequently on cyber law throughout the province and teaches cybercrime at both Osgoode Hall and Western University Law School. Prior to joining his current office, Michael worked at a litigation boutique in Washington, D.He graduated from Harvard Law School in 2008.

Ms. Julie Rozon – Fintrac

Julie Rozon is a Senior Analyst with the FT, Threats and International Unit. She has been with FINTRAC’s Intelligence Sector for a little over 2 years now. Prior to working in Intelligence, Julie spent 10 years within FINTRAC’s Compliance sector interpreting and explaining the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act and its associated Regulations.

Ms. Dina Mainville - Collisionless

Dina Mainville is the Founder & President of Collisionless, which is a professional services firm specializing in blockchain and digital assets.  She is a cryptocurrency regulatory compliance specialist who, since 2016, has presented to thousands of people across six continents on blockchain, money laundering controls for blockchain assets and global regulatory policy.  Dina serves as Founding Head and Chair of the Regulatory Committee at the Canadian Blockchain Consortium, and as a member of its Access to Banking Committee. Dina has trained hundreds of government and law enforcement professionals on cryptocurrency forensic investigations to combat money laundering, financial crime, human trafficking and other illicit activity. She has instructed in the Canadian Police College Cybercrime Investigators Course and Advanced Open-Source Intelligence Course.
